Aude Smeets Ph. D

Analytical Technical Expert Automation in GSK Vaccines Global QC

Aude received Ph. D. degree in 2008 from UCL University, Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium.

She has been working at GSK, a science-led global healthcare company for 10 years, her current activity, as part of the Global QC department, is the integration of new technologies in QC and the automation of current QC methods on automated pipetting platforms. In this talk, it will be presented how global and local QC organizations are addressing the challenge of integrating standard liquid handling platforms in a regulated cGMP environment. Current practices for equipment script development and validation, equipment validation and analytical method script validation will be shared.

Emmanuel Guedj

Emmanuel Guedj

R&D, Philip Morris International Neuchatel, Switzerland

Emmanuel Guedj has been working as a supervisor of the Transcriptomics and Genomics team at Philip Morris International R&D in Neuchatel (Switzerland) for 7 years. He is working in collaboration with the system toxicology team to carry out Gene expression/Genomics analysis and identify gene signatures and biomarkers of exposure. Prior to joining Philip Morris International, he had a position in the Biomarker discovery department at Merck in Geneva and was in charge of a Gene expression platform at the University of Medicine of Marseille (France). He is mainly focused on gene expression profiling using genechips, NGS applications (automation of Celero and Universal PLUS) and qPCR.

Jerom Vranken

Jerom Vranken

Research and quality advisor at the central laboratory of De Watergroep

I am Jerom Vranken, research and quality advisor at the central laboratory of De Watergroep, department bacteriology and biology. I mainly work on projects concerning NGS and RT-PCR/qPCR. De Watergroep is responsible for the production and supply of drinking water for most of Flanders. At the central laboratory, we monitor the quality of drinking water and the ground and surface water from which it is produced. For this purpose, we measure legally determined parameters for chemical and biological quality, but also a large number of process parameters that help us to maintain a high quality. The presentation will be about the start-up of a new water production center where we have mapped the bacterial communities in the filter installations at different times via 16S metagenomics. Tecan EVO's were used to prepare the DNA libraries and, for some samples, the extraction of nucleic acids.

Farbod Famili

Farbod Famili, Ph. D

Sr.Scientist Assay development & High throughput screening, Ncardia

Farbod Famili obtained PhD of Immunology from Leiden University Medical Center. He has over 5 years of experience as application scientist in cell based assay development, automation and hit identification in a variety of therapeutic areas. Currently, he is senior project lead of drug discovery and high throughput phenotypic screening at Ncardia. Ncardia is a global leader of stem cell drug discovery & development services. The goal of the company is to be the supportive and trusted partner for scientists operating in the hiPSC drug discovery and development space including cardiovascular and neural safety and efficacy studies. Here we present a case study that demonstrates efficient iPSC-derived cardiomyocyte scale up, HTS assay development/validation, and a phenotypic HTS campaign of over 3,600 compounds from Ncardia’s smart library.

Dr Lynda O'Leary

Dr Lynda O'Leary

Application specialist, Tecan Austria

Dr. Lynda O’Leary is an application specialist at Tecan Austria. She received her PhD in Biochemistry at the National University of Ireland, Galway, working in the field of apoptosis and cell signaling. Following this, she joined the Institute of Cancer Research in London as a postdoctoral fellow focusing on metastatic dormancy in breast cancer. Lynda has extensive experience in a wide range of molecular cell biology techniques, cell culture and imaging. In 2018, she joined the sales and marketing department with a primary focus on the Spark Cyto multimode microplate reader.

Hal Wehrenberg

Hal Wehrenberg

Head Product Management, Tecan, Switzerland

Hal Wehrenberg has been helping laboratories automate using Tecan equipment for a decade and a half. He started his automation journey as a field engineer in Tecan US for almost six years. During that time he had hands on service experience with readers, washers, liquid handler and was a coast to coast mentor. He had the true joy of working with many customers in many environments: Stem Cell Maintenance, Academic Research Labs, Drug discovery, Genomics, Clinical Diagnostics, and more. In 2010 he moved to Switzerland to join the Product Management team to help develop and launch the Fluent Platform. After five years as a Software Product Manager, Hal was then asked to take on the challenge of Head of Product Management. He & his team are responsible for Tecan’s liquid handlers, including new product development and life cycle management. The most exciting part of the job for Hal remains seeing customers rely on Tecan’s products to reach their goals. Nothing beats being a part of a creative, vital deployment of automation in a lab.
