Alzheimer’s Disease accounts for roughly 60-70% of all dementia cases. Both prevalence and incidence increase with age. The development of the Disease is characterized by three stages, as defined by the US National Institute on Aging workgroups. A preclinical stage of Alzheimer’s Disease, the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage due to AD, and the dementia stage due to AD. Amyloidosis occurs as early as the preclinical stage. The first cognitive deficits can manifest themselves in MCI stage, while in the dementia stage patients are unable to do any work or daily chores. The concentration of amyloid-beta (1-42) is therefore recognized as a useful biomarker (in combination with other biomarkers such as Tau and Phospho-Tau) in diagnosing Alzheimer’s Disease. Moreover, a number of independent studies showed the ratio of amyloid-beta (1-42) to amyloid-beta (1-40) to be a superior diagnostic marker for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Over the last 15 years measuring amyloid-beta (1-42) peptide has gained acceptance as a tool to aid in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Yet, clinical sensitivity and specificity usually is less than 85%. This can be largely attributed to the Gaussian distribution of Amyloid-beta production in the population. It leads to false positives in the group of "low" Abeta producers and to false negatives in the group of "high" Abeta producers. The Borrelia IgG ELISA employs the very highly specific recombinant Borrelia burgdorferi VlsE antigen and a highly specific crude lysate antigen blend from Borrelia burgdorferi sensu strictu, B. afzelii and B. garinii and therefore determines IgG antibodies with extremely high sensitivity and specificity due to superior antigen mixture. The performance of the Borrelia IgG ELISA is important especially to detect a borreliosis even in cases showing negative 14 kDa + OspC titers and to monitor the immune status.

In this test Borrelia burgdorferi-specific, 14 kDa fragment of the flagellin is used as a recombinant protein for antibody binding. This recombinant, in E. coli produced flagellin fragment, is found to be identical in all three subspecies of borrelia. Results of extensive comparative studies with ELISA, IFA and agglutination tests as well as Western Blot demonstrate that the 14kDa IgM ELISA shows a higher diagnostic specificity as well as an increased sensitivity for the early immune response in Lyme borreliosis. In addition to the recombinant 14 kDa flagellin fragment, the native OspC protein is used as coating antigen in the IBL Borrelia 14kDa + OspC IgM ELISA. Usually, the acute phase is indicated by high titers of IgM antibodies. The Borrelia IgM test can be used for the diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis in the acute and chronic stage of the disease both requiring a therapy.

hsCRP is the novel and evolving biomarker which provides a most useful predictive indicator for subsequent cardiovascular events. For measuring CRP in the low range as a risk marker for cardiovascular diseases, IBL International offers the high sensitivity CRP ELISA. Enzyme immunoassay for the direct quantitative determination of Estrone in human Serum. Estrone is a steroid like estriol and estradiol, belonging to the class of estrogens. The estrogens are involved in the development of female sex organs and secondary sex characteristics. Before the ovum is fertilized the main action of the estrogens is on the growth and function of the reproductive tract in order to prepare it for the fertilized ovum. During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle the estrone level shows a slight increase. The production of estrone then increases markedly to peak at around day 13. The peak is of short duration and by day 16 of the cycle levels will be low. A second peak occurs at around day 21 of the cycle and if fertilization does not occur, then the production of estrone decreases.

The High Mobility Group Box1 Protein (HMGB1) is a small protein (30 kDa) that is the major component of the non-histone nuclear protein group. The protein is ubiquitously expressed in eukaryotes and hereby serves a plethora of different functions within the subcellular localizations. HMGB1 can easily shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm and is widely expressed in various tissues.
Within the nucleus HMGB1 is involved in the DNA-binding and folding activity, as well as a regulator of various key DNA processes (recombination, repair, transcription, gene expression and genomic stability). However, once released into the cytoplasm by immunocompetent cells HMGB1 is involved in disease pathogenesis and inflammation (damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP). It also serves as a necrosis marker and is involved in immune response processes (liver failure, rheumatoid arthritis, acute lung injury) and disseminated intravascular coagulation and measured in case of an drug-induced liver failure.
