Audit Trails in Magellan (Pro) ™ Tracker/SparkControl Magellan™ Tracker

Description of Audit trails in Magellan Tracker

Introduction:

This article describes the different Audit trails in Magellan and how to access them.

Generally, the audit trail documents all information that influences the content of an electronic record/file.

All changes in the software are logged:

What was the change?

When was the change performed?

Who did the change?

There are different audit trails available in Magellan:

  1. Audit trails of the Magellan files (*.mth, *.wsp, *.smp).
  2. User administration audit trail
  3. Options and default settings audit trail
  4. System audit trail

1. Audit trails of the Magellan files (*.mth, *.wsp, *.smp -files):

Whenever there is a change, a new file is saved (visible in the Windows Explorer via different #- extensions). By examining the different files, changes can be traced. In the Magellan Wizards the most recent version of the file is visible only (without hash).
Audit trail information and previous versions of a file can be accessed on the ‘Save-page’ of the according Magellan wizard (e.g. Evaluate results wizard, Sample ID List wizard, Create/edit a method wizard). When saving changes the Audit Trail Comment field can be used to specify the change.

2. User administration audit trail
The User Administration Audit Trail logs all changes to the User Management (creation of new users, change of roles or single rights, failed logins, etc.).
The User management audit trail can be accessed in the User administration via the ‘Audit trail’ button:

The current audit trail file always has got a red cross meaning that the checksum of the file is incorrect. This is due to the fact that the file is currently written and no proper checksum has been generated so far.
There is a size limit of 1MB for user administration audit trail files – every time this limit is exceeded a new file is generated. Moreover, a new file is created each time the „Tecan User Management Server 1.1“ is started anew – usually this is the case if the PC is rebooted.

3. Options Audit trail
The Options audit trail logs all changes regarding the options and default settings in Magellan.
The Options audit trail is accessible via Magellan under Miscellaneous/Options/Miscellaneous/Options and default settings audit trail.

4. System Audit trail
The system audit trail function writes several Magellan events into a log file (Login, start measurement, attach signature,..). A new log file is created once per week. Previous files are transferred into an ‘Archive’-folder.
The System Audit trail is accessible via Windows Explorer under C:\Users\Public\Documents\Tecan\LogFiles\SystemAuditTrail
Please note, that the ‘SystemAuditTrail’ folder is a hidden folder which means the Windows Explorer settings must be set in that way that hidden folders are shown.
