As the name suggests, the Tecan User Management System (UMS) is used to manage the users who log in to Tecan software. These users can be defined and categorized into various roles, each with different user rights within the software.
User Roles in Freedom EVOware
In EVOware, four default user roles are defined: EVOware_Operator, EVOware_Power User, EVOware_Application Specialist, and Administrator. The following rights have been designated for each role:
User Role |
Rights |
EVOware_Operator |
• Run a pipetting script and process • Run maintenance scripts • View a pipetting script (but not change it) • Handle errors during pipetting (except collision errors) Since Operators are not allowed to create or modify scripts and processes, most of the program interface features are hidden or disabled. |
EVOware_Power User |
Same rights as Operator with addition of: • Start running pipetting scripts at specified line number • Run Direct commands |
EVOware_Application Specialist |
Same rights as Operator with addition of: • Create, modify and save pipetting scripts and processes • Edit the configuration of the pipetting instrument • Edit the configurations of the carriers and labware • Edit the liquid classes for pipetting • Change the settings in the Configuration tool • Skip pre-programmed timers during pipetting |
Administrator |
Same rights as application specialist with addition of: • Create and disable/re-enable users • Configure the options in the Tecan User Management system • Enable or disable the electronic signatures feature |
Access Requirements
All four EVOware user groups need read/write access to the Tecan install directory and its subdirectories, as well as to the Program Data Tecan Folder (C:\ProgramData\Tecan). Although the EVOware_Operator group cannot create or modify scripts or processes, the software still requires read/write access to write log and export files and audit trail data.
Managing Tecan User Management
Tecan User Management can be managed within EVOware Configure, or it can be managed externally using the Tecan.UserManagement.Manage program. The latter will be used in our process discussion below.
Creating or Modifying User Roles
To create a new user role or modify existing ones, follow these steps:
- Go to Start -> Tecan -> Tecan.UserManagement.Manage.
- On the right side of the window, you will find options to Add Role and Modify Role.
When adding a new role:
- Provide the role name.
- Select all the rights that the role should have. For example, to create a role named "NewRole" with rights in addition to those of an EVOware_Operator, select the additional rights accordingly
To assign a new role to a new user or an existing user:
- Simply select the "NewRole" in the modify user section.
