I have a passion for biology, technology and improving people’s lives, so it’s great to be part of a company involved in the exciting breakthroughs we have seen in these areas over the past few decades. I really enjoy working in Tecan’s Partnering Business as it allows me to support talented teams, not only from Tecan, but also from some of the leading IVD and biotech companies, providing solutions that have a global impact.

What is your favorite recent project/task you’ve worked on and why?

I am involved in a wide variety of projects and tasks as a product manager, across the entire product lifecycle from development to phase-out. The biggest highlight for me is the sense of teamwork and strong collaboration, whether it is preparing an innovative product for launch, troubleshooting, or working with regulatory teams to ensure we have compliant documentation.

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

There is a commonly used metaphor that, as a product manager, you need to focus on both a single piece of bark and the whole forest; thinking both tactically and strategically. This certainly rings true in my role, and I enjoy the variety this brings to my daily interactions, communicating with both customers and colleagues. I work on technical topics relating to assays, hardware or software, liaise with mechanical and electronic engineers, contribute to operational activities with logistics and manufacturing teams, and strategize with sales and marketing.

Why do you love your job at Tecan?

Having worked in various genetics labs over the last decade or so, I’ve seen firsthand the remarkable transformation that is taking place in genomics. The sector has been tremendously empowered by NGS technologies and, here at Tecan, I have the opportunity to apply and share all the knowledge I gained about NGS methods. I support scientists by helping them to make their genomics workflows as efficient as possible, hopefully enabling them to avoid some of the hurdles, inconveniences and sources of error that I’ve encountered along the way.

What is your favourite recent project/task you’ve worked on and why?

I recently assisted a customer programming a Freedom EVO® NGS workstation to automate NGS library preparation using a newly released commercial kit. This was requested by several customer labs, and I personally like scripting – I enjoy the idea that an automated workflow I’ve created is allowing scientists to achieve reliability, precision and accuracy that are essential for high-quality NGS library prep.

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

My job consists in ‘translating’ a lab protocol – usually one designed to be manually executed – into a script that Tecan automation workstations can execute in a faster, more precise and more reliable way. Once a script is ready, it has to be validated to demonstrate that the NGS libraries obtained are as good as, if not even better than, those achieved manually. Finally, we write an application note – similar to a short scientific paper – describing the NGS library preparation kit, the method used on the Tecan instrument and the results obtained.

Why do you love your job at Tecan?

At Tecan, we make a significant contribution to the life sciences industry and to a healthier society. Working on something so meaningful is what I really love about my job. I continue to find the combination of science and technology incredibly fascinating, even after 15 years of employment with Tecan, as every day is different.

What is your favorite recent project/task you’ve worked on and why?

We recently developed MAPlinx®, Tecan’s next generation OEM software platform. Its design is based on fully pre-tested modular building blocks, and can be tailored to match any automation needs. We also produced an innovative 3D simulator that enables us to write and test the software before the hardware of our instrument is manufactured. This cutting-edge technology helps us to increase development efficiency in our R&D department.

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

My role is to lead and manage the global software strategy and development of our instruments. I aim to produce state-of-the-art software which provides an efficient, reliable and safe service for our customers’ applications. My department is continuously pushing innovations in our software; introducing new technologies and taking full advantage of a continuously improving agile development environment.

Why do you love your job at Tecan?

I’ve been working in R&D since 2009, developing new consumables products and overall solutions for the life science business. Our team is highly motivated, and we’re committed to developing innovative products and solutions to help our customers make their applications more reliable and robust. Working in R&D sees a new challenge every day, and provides opportunities to do great things. It’s a very productive environment, and the close interaction between the different departments enables a great flow of knowledge.

What is your favorite recent project/task you’ve worked on and why?

There is no single project which is my favorite, as each one is special and inspiring in some way, but my last big project was the development of a new production line for our MCA disposable tip portfolio. Working with consumables requires a broad understanding of the whole system – hardware, software and applications – and this kind of project gives me the opportunity to acquire knowledge of the latest technologies in materials, design and production.

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

My job is to create new products which enable customers to perform their applications in an efficient and reliable way, as well as to maintain our product portfolio. For example, by developing nested disposable tips, we effectively offer customers more workspace on the same instrument, by stacking multiple layers of tips on top of each other. We are responsible for the design, verification, regulatory aspects and final inspection of new products before launch, so we are in regular contact with customers, various internal departments and our production sites, using this constant feedback to help us continuously improve our products.

The people you interact with, and the issues you need to take care of, are so diverse that it never gets boring.

As an engineer with a keen interest in science, I really couldn’t think of a better place to work. My role is very varied, and no two days are the same. Tecan really invests in its employees, and I have gained invaluable knowledge and experience since starting here in 2009.

What is your favorite recent project/task you’ve worked on and why?

My most recent task was a large project which involved the installation of multiple instruments across several sites throughout the UK. This was quite challenging, due to the complexity of the various instrument configurations and applications required. It involved collaborating effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, as well as a number of third parties. Overseeing the full project from start to successful completion was really satisfying.

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

My duties vary day-to-day, and are guided by our customers’ support requirements. My responsibilities include the service and consumables revenue within my region, management of staff, and liaising with both the sales team and our customers to ensure we deliver projects within the required timeframes. My team also handles any customer requests for interventions, liaising with our service team and product experts to deliver the best possible service to our customers.

Why do you love your job at Tecan?

It is a wonderful feeling to be able to support some of the most important laboratories in the world, helping them to keep running smoothly. Our customers use Freedom EVO® platforms for many different purposes – food safety tests, human disease diagnosis, fundamental research, the list goes on – ¬which means that each request offers a unique and challenging puzzle for me to solve. I enjoy the research, the interdisciplinary cooperation and the mental gymnastics involved in finding the best solution.

A few weeks ago, I gave my first Freedom EVOware® software training to a small group of Tecan colleagues and customers. I like presenting and explaining information, as well as creating a positive atmosphere and putting people at ease to optimize their learning process. We had a great time together, shared many laughs and everyone passed the final exam!

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

At Expertline (product support), the pressure can be on; customers need a solution for their problems as soon as possible, and case after case is coming in. I am constantly dividing my time between training and troubleshooting and, thankfully, I’m surrounded by helpful, knowledgeable and supportive colleagues. For me, it’s all about a trainee leaving my classroom with a smile on their face, or a happy thank you email from a customer after a case has been cracked.

Why do you love your job at Tecan?

Working in corporate development allows me to challenge myself and learn every day. I am immersed in a dynamic environment, and work on numerous exciting projects, from market analysis and strategy development to M&A and post-merger integration. I have the opportunity to work with colleagues across multiple departments and geographic regions on a daily basis, which is invaluable for building an in-depth understanding of the business and driving group-level initiatives, as well as for professional development.

What is your favorite recent project/task you’ve worked on and why?

A lot of my time is devoted to analyzing and driving acquisition opportunities. I’ve recently been working on Tecan’s acquisition of NuGEN Technologies, Inc., coordinating due diligence and integrating the new business and team into the Tecan family. It’s been an exciting journey that started with desk research and financial modelling, but quickly developed into an extensive cross-functional effort. This requires a lot of planning, attention to detail and coordination within the team, and I am excited to be in the epicenter of this project.

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

What unites all the different tasks that I perform – be it M&A opportunity overview, strategic initiative proposal or integration planning – is the opportunity to make an impact. Preparing business cases and pitching them to the management is a demanding task, and does not always result in proposals being accepted, yet it is always accompanied by constructive discussions and is therefore highly rewarding. Every case is different, and the diversity of market segments and business models that I come across in my job is a great source for learning, as well as developing new opportunities to drive the business forward.

Why do you love your job at Tecan?

I love the multinational environment and the awesome, talented, dedicated and humorous colleagues I work with across the company. On a day-to-day basis, there is a real sense that we are all working towards an achievable vision, and I am proud to be part of the team making this a reality. My job at Tecan is very varied, which I love; every day I deal with different stakeholders in several jurisdictions around the globe, and never focus on only one type of tax.

What is your favorite recent project/task you’ve worked on and why?

It is always a pleasure to be involved with the merger and acquisition projects. This can include analyzing companies from a financial and tax risk perspective, and working strategically together over a long period of time, starting with the due diligence phase and hopefully ending with a successful integration of an acquired partner.

What would you tell a potential applicant about your job/work duties?

Tecan has a significant business and employment presence in many countries, covering the entire lifespan of our product portfolio, including research and development, manufacturing and distribution activities. Every day, I am advising different stakeholders to understand the diverse business tax consequences wherever we operate. Tax legislation itself is complicated, and varies considerably among the countries where we operate. Our cross-border supply routes are also complex and can result in conflicting claims from tax authorities in individual countries. We work very closely with our finance colleagues around the world and operate to very high accounting, tax filing and reporting standards.
