Orchid and Tecan announce supply partnership

Princeton, N.J. AND Hombrechtikon/Zurich, Switzerland, Sept. 18, 2000 – Orchid BioSciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: ORCH) and TECAN (SWX: TECN) today announced they have entered into a strategic partnership in which TECAN will supply to Orchid state-of-the-art systems solutions for DNA processing.

Under the terms of the non-exclusive agreement, TECAN will supply Orchid with its automated DNA processing solution for use in the manufacture of SNPware™ consumable kits and in support of Orchid’s genotyping operations in its high-throughput MegaSNPatron™ facility.  Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Orchid is pleased to establish this preferred supplier relationship with TECAN, a leading global provider of automated solutions for the life sciences industry,” said Michael Boyce-Jacino, Ph.D., vice president of research and development of Orchid.  “TECAN’s state-of-the-art DNA processing solution provides important enhancements needed for both SNPware kit manufacturing and in our high-throughput MegaSNPatron genotyping facility.”

“We are delighted to strengthen our business relationship with Orchid, a leader in genotyping,” said Emile Sutcliffe, chief executive officer of the TECAN Group. “This is another indication that we as a company are in the right place at the right time. When life science innovators need automated solutions, they come to TECAN.”

TECAN’s automated DNA processing solution is designed to offer its customers flexibility combined with high throughput. For example, it allows complete automation of different DNA extraction methods on one platform. DNA extraction kits from various manufacturers are validated to guarantee accurate and reproducible results.  The business applications for this technology are expanding exponentially in the field of life sciences as a result of the Human Genome Project and the growing importance of functional genomics.

Orchid’s expanding lines of SNPstream instruments and SNPware consumables are designed to enable researchers to rapidly analyze single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), the basic unit of genetic variation, in order to identify their role in disease susceptibility and drug treatment response.  SNPstream 25K incorporates the accuracy, robustness and cost effectiveness of Orchid’s patented SNP-IT technology in a fully-automated, high-throughput assay platform that can analyze up to 25,000 SNPs per day.
