Männedorf, Switzerland, 02 July 2003: Tecan, a leading player in the Life Science supply industry, today announced the launch of Freedom EVO, a series of powerful laboratory workstations designed to deliver an unmatched range of automated applications in genomics, proteomics, drug discovery and clinical diagnostics.

The Freedom EVO represents the next step in Tecan’s delivery of world-class laboratory automation to the life science market, and consolidates 20 years of liquid handling and robotic experience in a new and scalable platform.

Jan Timmers, Head of Business Areas Biopharma and Clinical Diagnostics, commented: “The introduction of the Freedom EVO platform is an important milestone in Tecan’s business strategy serving the automation needs of our customers. We have reached our objective of providing a platform that has the necessary flexibility and adaptability to match all application needs in our four business areas [spanning the Life Sciences].” He added: “From drug screening and ADME applications, nucleic acid sample preparation and protein crystallization solutions up to powerful workstations for clinical diagnostics, the Freedom EVO’s modular platform concept brings significant new benefits to our customers. It also offers a sound foundation upon which they can integrate future offerings, including those from Tecan’s innovative product pipeline.”

Faced with continually changing application needs, today’s modern laboratory requires automation products that are both easily installed and quickly re-configured. These needs are met by the Freedom EVO, whose modular design allows each system to be configured according to the customer’s unique requirements. The Freedom EVO also permits straightforward integration of previously developed options and applications and ensures continuing compatibility with new solutions from a leading worldwide supplier of laboratory automation.

Available in a variety of sizes to meet different throughput requirements, the Freedom EVO is easily configured with options from Tecan’s extensive portfolio that covers detection, separation and storage. Moreover, 3rd party devices and customized devices are easily integrated delivering limitless flexibility. True freedom to evolve.

Software control is managed by Freedom EVOware, a completely new and easy to use software package that combines pipetting with scheduled operation of multiple devices in a single package. The new graphical user interface, combined with enhanced support for applications, streamlines the setup and running of assays, allowing scientists to focus on research. Multilevel user management and full audit trail allow laboratories working in a regulated environment to comply with the FDA’s CFR 21 Part 11.

Tecan’s development processes meet worldwide regulatory requirements including the In-Vitro Diagnostics Directive 98/79/EC. Specific Freedom EVO configurations will be released for diagnostic applications making Freedom EVO the platform of choice for Clinical Diagnostics.
